About This Call

BIGG: Breakthrough Ideas in Global Glass is a dynamic collaboration among The Ohio State University Department of Art's Glass Program, OSU Urban Arts Space, and Hawk Galleries, sponsored by Steuben Glass. The exhibition will discover and introduce to the public a select group of artists with conceptual and working engagement in glass who have completed their formal training in art beyond the baccalaureate (MFA or equivalent) since 2000. Through an international juried selection process, the exhibition intends to expand the discourse about glass art globally.

Eligible artists may submit up to ten entries. Each entry will be judged on its individual merits. The entry fee is $30.00, and all entries must be original works created in the last three years. Work must be priced with the understanding that a standard commission rate of 50% will apply. The exhibition will be presented at the OSU Urban Arts Space and Hawk Galleries in Columbus, Ohio, with exhibition dates from July 10 through October 10, 2009.

Awards valuing more than $100,000 will be presented to accepted artists. Up to ten artists will receive a $1,000 travel stipend to attend the opening reception on July 10, 2009. Selected artists will be eligible for representation by Hawk Galleries at the 2009 International Expositions of Sculpture Objects & Functional Arts in Chicago. One artist will be invited for a year-long OSU Department of Art Post-MFA Fellowship, and selected artists will be viable for Steuben Glass Residency Fellowships. Jurors include Tina Oldknow (Curator of Modern Glass, Corning Museum of Glass), Lino Tagliapietra (Italian glass Maestro), and Tom Hawk (Director, Hawk Galleries). Applicants will be notified on April 30, 2009.
