About This Call
The City of Westminster is seeking four experienced muralists to complete murals along the Big Dry Creek Trail, a 12-mile trail system that winds through the city and is used for exercising, commuting, wildlife viewing, and connecting with nature. The Big Dry Creek Trail Murals Project is a multi-year initiative targeting underpasses along the trail system. This is the third project along Big Dry Creek.
Two artists will complete murals during July on either side of the underpass along Big Dry Creek Trail that goes under the railroad just east of Wadsworth Parkway (approximately 350 sq. ft. each side). Two artists will complete murals during September on either side of the underpass along Big Dry Creek that goes under Wadsworth Parkway (approximately 140 sq. ft. each side). All murals must have a theme associated with human connection to nature, wellness, literacy, outdoor recreation, or a combination of these. Artists hired for the railroad underpass will be paid $3,000 commission per side plus materials. Artists hired for the Wadsworth Parkway underpass will be paid $2,000 commission per side plus materials.
Applicants must submit 5 images and up to 1 video, a current resume (maximum 2 pages) outlining professional accomplishments including previous murals completed and relevant local/state government contracts, a statement of interest (250 words or less) outlining interest in the opportunity and experience with similar projects, and a vision statement (500 words or less) describing the artist's vision for the mural along with a rough draft of the proposed image. The art must be apolitical, non-religious, and not government-centric. No vulgar, profane, discriminatory, violent, or pornographic references are permitted. The selection process includes three steps: initial submissions due July 6, 2018; six to eight finalists selected by July 17 to submit and present concepts (finalists will receive $200 compensation); and final selection by July 20, 2018. Railroad murals must be completed by August 15, 2018, and Wadsworth Parkway murals by October 5, 2018. The City of Westminster reserves the right to choose anywhere from zero to four artists based on the quality of proposed murals.
