About This Call
The Surface Design Association, Northern California Chapter invites artists residing in Northern California to enter their juried exhibition, Beyond the Surface, at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, January 6–February 28, 2016. Entry is open to both SDA members and non-members. The exhibition seeks innovative fiber art that explores the wide spectrum of textile techniques with contemporary ideas and traditional and unusual fiber materials. Deborah Corsini, former curator at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, will jury entries. A reception on Sunday, January 10, 2016, will include a juror talk and artist walk-through.
Eligibility is open to artists living in California zip codes 93592-96160. Work made of any fiber material or fiber technique is eligible, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional works and installations of any size. Entries must have been completed after January 1, 2013. Up to 3 artworks may be entered per artist. Work previously exhibited at the Museum or produced in a workshop or classroom under instructor supervision is not eligible. Entry fees are $30 for SDA members (membership must be current through February 2016) and $55 for non-members. The application deadline is November 6, 2015. Entrants will be notified by December 1, 2015.
Accepted work should be hand-delivered or shipped to an East Bay location between December 19, 2015–January 3, 2016. Installation dates are January 4-5, 2016. All work will be insured for the artist's stated insurance amount while on SJMQT premises. Awards include 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, 3rd Place $100, and an SDA Award of Excellence. A 50% commission of the retail sale price will be charged by the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles for any sold work. Work should be picked up February 29, 2016, at SJMQT or March 1-6, 2016, from an East Bay location.
