About This Call
The South Haven Center for the Arts seeks submissions of 2D self-portraits that share the artist's narrative. The exhibition runs May 22 – July 18, 2020, in conjunction with Frida Kahlo's Garden, a National Endowment for the Humanities traveling exhibit. Work does not have to be representational and must have been created in the past two years. All media are accepted except video and digital work presented on electronic devices. 2D work must be no more than 36" in any direction and no more than 6" deep, including frame. All work must be hung on a wall; no freestanding pedestal work is permitted.
Artists may submit up to 3 entries for a $40.00 entry fee. Artist Level Members of the SHCA receive $10 off the entry fee. Submissions must include digital JPEG images, a title for each work, and a brief statement explaining how the piece relates to the theme "Beyond, Behind, Beneath…the self-portrait." The juror is Alan Larkin, a South Bend-based artist who works in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Notifications will be emailed by April 25, 2020. Awards include $250 for 1st Place and $100 for 2nd Place.
Accepted work must be framed and installation-ready with appropriate wiring (no sawtooth hangers). Work must be labeled with artist contact information, title, medium, and price. Delivery of accepted work is May 5–16, 2020, or by appointment. Shipped work must arrive by May 15, 2020 in sturdy, reusable containers with return shipping labels included. Artwork may be picked up July 21–25, 2020. Work not picked up within 30 days of the exhibition's closing may become property of the South Haven Center for the Arts. Exhibited work may be sold at the specified price, with the SHCA receiving a 35% commission. Contact Kerry Hagy at [email protected] with questions.
