About This Call
The Berkeley Art Center invites submissions for its 2021 Juried Members Show, themed "Uplift / Heavy Lift." This exhibition seeks work that responds to the theme and reflects the nuanced layers of frustration, strength, grief, resilience, and perseverance. Selections will be juried by guest curator Thea Quiray Tagle, a curator, art writer, and assistant professor of gender & sexuality studies and critical ethnic studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Submitting is free for current members. New and renewing members can sign up at a sliding scale of $15–$45. Up to three Curator Spotlight awards will be chosen to receive a one-on-one studio visit with Thea via Zoom, and a special Audience Award will be announced at the exhibition closing. Recent artworks in all media are welcome. A short artist statement or project statement is required. The show will feature "small works" with a size limit of 30 inches in any direction, including frames. Freestanding sculpture may be up to 48 inches tall and no more than 24 inches in any other dimension, with pedestals provided by BAC. Works must be ready to hang, dry, and framed where appropriate. Artists must provide all necessary equipment for sound and video works. Work must have the artist's name clearly written on back unless the nature of the work makes it impossible to do so. 70% of sales go to the artist and 30% goes towards Berkeley Art Center.
Only greater Northern California Bay Area residents may submit. Submission deadline is May 6, 2021, by 11:59pm. Accepted artists will be notified May 14. Drop-off dates are May 18–23, 2021, 11am–5pm by appointment. Exhibition dates are June 12–July 18, 2021.
