About This Call
The Beaverton Arts Commission invites artists to submit public art proposals for placement in three areas of the Children's Section of the Beaverton City Library: the portal archway leading into the Children's Section, the frieze (up to five sections available), and the front and side panels of the Children's Desk. The total art budget is $15,400, with $7,300 allocated for the Portal Archway, $6,000 for the Frieze, and $2,100 for the Desk Panels.
Specific dimensions are provided for each area: Portal Archway has two sides measuring 4'4" W x 11'5" H angling up to 11'18" H, with an area above the entry measuring 15' x 2" W sloping down on the sides and a center area 6'6" wide by 1'10" tall. The Frieze consists of five sections in the middle and two on each side, with each section having three parts measuring 42" W x 27 1/8" H, 89 ½" W x 27 1/8" H, and 42" W x 27 1/8" H. Children's Section Desk Panels include two front panels each 59 ¾" W x 15 ¼" H and two side panels each 21" W x 15 ¼" H.
Applicants must submit 8 digital images of past work and a written proposal of no more than 2,000 characters. Individual artists or artist teams may apply. Three finalists will be selected based on the quality of their past work and written proposal, and will be asked to present drawings, proposed timeline, and budget. Each finalist will be paid $250 for their proposal. The selected artist or team will be commissioned to create work in wood, metal, or other suitable material. Artwork must be of the highest quality, appropriate in size and durability with a cleanable, vandalism-resistant surface, suitable for a high-traffic public facility with no safety concerns, and attractive and inviting to children. The artwork should complement the library's color scheme of purple, green, and blue and help create an identifiable children's area. Deadline for entry is Friday, January 30, 2009. Judging occurs the week of February 9, 2009, with artist notification the week of February 23, 2009. Finalist interviews and selection panel meetings are scheduled for the week of March 30, 2009, with artist selection in April 2009 and installation by September 2009. Contact Jayne Scott at 503-526-2288 or [email protected] for additional information.
