About This Call

Beaverton Arts Commission seeks to place two sculptural works in prominent outdoor locations in downtown Beaverton, Oregon, seven miles west of Portland. Sculptors are invited to submit images of existing works for temporary placement (24 months). This opportunity is open to artists from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.

Two sculptures will be selected. Each artist will receive a $2,000 loan fee. The total budget per sculpture is $3,000, which includes up to $1,000 for transportation, base, and installation. The artist is responsible for transportation and installation of the work, including a base that will be attached to concrete. The City of Beaverton will maintain the work, create publicity materials, and feature the work on the Beaverton Arts Commission website.

Artwork must be durable and free of precious or fragile materials, suitable to outdoor settings with pedestrian, skateboard, and bicycle traffic, and reasonably vandal-resistant. The work should be pedestrian scale with a base not exceeding 25 square feet (5' x 5'). Artwork must meet all public safety and accessibility requirements and be welcoming to Beaverton's diverse population. There is particular interest in sculptures expressing movement and elegance.

Two sites are available: Lombard Plaza (SW Lombard at SW Broadway), an active transportation hub with approximately 70 square feet available, suitable for larger scale, bold work; and a landscape area east of the Beaverton City Library entrance (12375 SW 5th Street), where pedestrian scale and accessibility are desired.

Eligibility is open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, suitability for the site, and durability, maintenance, and safety concerns. Applications must include an artist's statement (not exceeding 1,000 characters), up to 10 digital images of sculptures (1920 x 1920 pixels), and a current resume (not exceeding 2 pages per artist). There is no application fee. Deadline: March 12, 2010, 11 p.m. PST. Selection will occur in mid-March 2010, with installation in early June 2010 and de-installation in June 2012.
