Beautiful Parts

Beautiful Parts is the first annual exhibition hosted by the CSUN Alumni Association Art Chapter, juried by artist Kim Abeles and organized by the curatorial collective Rough Play. The exhibition invites CSUN Art Alumni to consider cultural constructions of aesthetic appeal and asks: "How do we receive messages about beauty in a contemporary global society and how are we affected by internalizing ideals?" Works selected respond to canons of bodily proportion, such as ratio depiction (waist-to-chest, waist-to-hip, and leg-to-body), and consider the distinction between "real" and "ideal". Artists approach these issues with awareness of the history and continued evolution of dialogues surrounding body image and the related psychologies of status, identity, physical attraction, and self-esteem.

Beautiful Parts will be held in the CSUN West Gallery and will coincide with the Pacific Standard Time exhibition in the CSUN Main Gallery: THE GREAT WALL OF LOS ANGELES: JUDITH F. BACA'S EXPERIMENTATIONS IN COLLABORATION AND CONCRETE. The exhibition runs October 14-26, 2017, with an opening reception date to be announced. Notification of acceptance will be sent Friday, September 8, 2017. Artwork delivery is October 12, 2017, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., and pick-up is Friday, October 27, 2017, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Eligibility is open to all CSUN Art Alumni. Accepted media is all formats. Submit 1-3 images and up to 3 videos (minimum 1 total work sample, maximum 3 total samples). 2D work must be wall-hanging ready. Maximum 3D dimension must fit through a standard doorway. Video and special installation must be coordinated with the artist. Each piece must be labeled with artist name, title, year, medium, and dimensions. The CSUN Alumni Association Art Chapter aims to keep connections through exhibition and curatorial opportunities, artist talks, social gatherings, and promoting alumni accomplishments.
