About This Call

The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs requests submissions of qualifications from artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install a work of public art at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive, Dallas, Texas. The project budget is $250,000.

The Bath House Cultural Center, built in 1930, is an Art Deco building originally constructed as a recreational facility on the shores of White Rock Lake. The building now houses a 116-seat theater, two gallery spaces, the White Rock Lake Museum, and multipurpose spaces. The public art project will create an artist-designed art usage space that balances an existing artwork and performance space by Linnea Glatt, is accessible to diverse activities from yoga to painting, may include cover or elements to provide shade, may provide seating, complements the Bath House's Art Deco architecture, requires little or no maintenance, and is free of safety hazards.

The project will be divided into three phases: Phase 1 (Research) requires participation in site visits, community meetings and independent research; Phase 2 (Project Concept Development) involves collaboration with public art staff to review and develop ideas; Phase 3 (Project Design Plan) requires submission of a public art design plan including site plan, concept/theme, potential materials, special considerations, and draft budget not to exceed $250,000. The Artist Selection panel will review submissions in late Spring 2019 and identify up to three artists or artist teams to develop site-specific concept designs. Each selected artist will receive a $3,000 stipend to cover costs of producing a site-specific public art concept proposal. All professional artists are eligible to apply except those currently under contract with the City of Dallas Public Art Program, City of Dallas employees and their spouses, members of the Public Art Committee, consultants under contract for any phase of the projects, and undergraduate students. Local artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Submission deadline: April 22, 2019. Work sample requirements: 3-6 images.
