About This Call
The Town of Basalt and Basalt Chamber of Commerce are seeking a design for a monument sign to be installed at a roundabout on Highway 82. This is a design competition open to artists currently living in the Roaring Fork Valley (zip codes: 81621, 81611, 81612, 81615, 81656, 81623, 81654, 81601, 81602). One entry per artist is permitted.
The winning design will receive $2,500 and will be selected by the Basalt Town Council from the top three jury selections at a meeting on January 14, 2013. The winner must accept within two days of notification. The Art Piece must be installed no later than June 1, 2014. The budget is no more than $20,000 for the Art Piece and no more than $5,000 for the pedestal.
The sign must incorporate lettering reading "Welcome to Basalt" and represent the town's brand: "Confluence of Rivers, Recreation and Culture." The Art Piece must be no larger than 12 feet high and 8 feet wide, with lettering no larger than 50 square feet. The sign is single-sided, facing Highway 82 with a plain finished back. The Art Piece (independent of the pedestal) must be movable to a different location. Lighting must comply with Code. The sign should be set back a minimum of 8 feet from the back of the sidewalk encircling the roundabout. No trees may be removed. Electricity and water are available at the site.
The winner is responsible for design (including lighting and detailed pedestal specifications), construction of the Art Piece and pedestal, and supervision of placement. The Town of Basalt and Basalt Chamber of Commerce will own the copyright and intellectual property. The winner must provide a list of materials and information about durability in Basalt's weather conditions (-25 to +95 degrees) and maintenance requirements. A two-year "wear and tear warranty" is required.
