Barkley Regional Airport Gate Area Projects

Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) in Paducah, Kentucky is commissioning two artists or artist teams to create site-specific works of art for the airport gate area: the Gate Area West Wall and the Gate Area Glass Wall. The selected artist for each opportunity will prepare and deliver a print-ready digital file of their approved design. The final artwork will be printed and installed by a specialty fabricator contracted by the airport. The design fee for the Gate Area West Wall is $3,500; the design fee for the Gate Area Glass Wall is $7,500. Both fees are inclusive of any travel costs.

To be eligible, artists must currently live or have previously lived within 50 miles of Barkley Regional Airport. Up to three finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals for each of the two opportunities. Finalists will be paid a $1,000 stipend to attend an orientation, develop a site-specific concept proposal including a visual rendering and narrative description, and present to the Art Committee.

The Gate Area West Wall artwork will be printed on Koroseal, a commercial fabric wallcovering, and installed above a row of privacy seating near the gate counter. The artwork area is approximately 23 feet wide and 8 feet tall. The Gate Area Glass Wall artwork will be printed on window film on the glass wall separating the security checkpoint line from the concourse area. The glass wall is approximately 950 square feet with 18 panes of glass, most 4 feet wide and various heights. The lower glass panels must have a certain level of opacity or incorporate a frosted glass effect for privacy in the security screening area. Applications are due July 11, 2022. Work samples should include 5-10 images and up to 5 videos.
