About This Call
Bellevue Arts Museum invites architects, designers, artists, craftspeople, and makers working in the fields of architecture and urban design to submit proposals for exhibition. The 2021 BAM Biennial marks the launch of a new format examining specific fields and areas of study within art, craft, and design, following five previous Biennials focused on individual materials (fiber, clay, wood, metal, and glass).
The exhibition seeks to promote discussion on the essential role of effective and equitable design in an expanding urban environment, particularly as the Eastside connects to Seattle through light rail extension in 2023 and Amazon's HQ2 project develops in downtown Bellevue. The biennial examines how architecture and urban design can respond to contemporary challenges around sustainability, density, equity, and livability.
Eligibility is limited to artists currently residing, working, or studying in the Pacific Northwest region (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and British Columbia). Artists of any age and career stage are encouraged to apply. The $20 entry fee includes submission of 3-20 digital files (minimum 3 images required; up to 5 audio files and 3 video files permitted), a project proposal (up to 500 words), resume, image checklist, and supporting documentation. Selected artists (typically 30-40) will be announced by late February 2021 and have approximately six months to complete and deliver work for installation. The exhibition runs from November 2021 through April 2022. One recipient will receive a $1,500 cash prize and the opportunity for a solo exhibition at Bellevue Arts Museum within 2 years. Bellevue Arts Museum will insure all accepted works during the exhibition.
