About This Call

The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC), a not-for-profit organization established in 1986, offers affordable studio and shared workshop spaces, artist advancement and exhibition opportunities to professional emerging and mid-career artists. The core program is its jury-selected Artist Residency Program, which accepts applications throughout the year.

BAC's 33,000 square-foot campus houses 65 indoor and outdoor studios, including specific studios for metal smiths, wood and stone workers. Studios vary in size and cost is based on square footage and amenities such as natural light and running water. The complex includes a fully functional print room, dark room, woodworking area, welding room, and ceramic kilns for artist use. BAC maintains a programming schedule of more than 15 exhibitions per season as well as multiple fundraising events, educational programs, and artist advancement programming. Resident artists receive notice of open calls for exhibition opportunities at BAC and beyond, including museum shows, art fairs, grants, corporate installations, and art sales. Residents also enjoy access to onsite and offsite exhibition opportunities, artist advancement programming and coaching, printmaking and photography workshops, kiln and woodworking facilities, Wi-Fi, and 24-hour facility access.

Residents are selected through a jurying process using a Likert Scale, with primary criteria being conceptual innovation and technical proficiency of artwork. Applicants' names are kept confidential and applications are reviewed by jurors selected from a rotating panel of gallerists, museum professionals, collectors, curators, and higher education professionals. Out of 30 points, only applicants with an average score of 18 points or above are eligible for acceptance. Finalists are invited for a 30-minute in-person, phone, or videoconference administrative interview. Application deadlines are February 1st, April 1st, June 1st, August 1st, October 1st, and December 1st. Submit your artist statement, artistic CV, statement of intent for residency, 2 professional references, headshot, and 4-6 images representing your body of work. Entry fee is $51.75.
