About This Call
The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC), a not-for-profit organization established in 1986, offers short term studio residencies with access to shared workshop spaces to professional emerging and mid-career artists. Short-term residencies are available for 3, 6 or 9 months and must result in a presentation, either in studio or locally, of artwork or projects produced during the residency. Residency is available for local, national and international artists, and galleries are encouraged to apply for visiting artists. Spaces are available for all mediums, including outside and inside studios.
BAC's 33,000 square-foot campus houses 65 indoor and outdoor studios, including specific studios for metal smiths, wood and stone workers. Studios vary in size, with cost based on square footage and amenities such as natural light and running water. The complex provides shared workshop spaces including a fully functional print room, dark room, woodworking area, welding room and ceramic kilns. BAC maintains a programming schedule of more than 15 exhibitions per season and provides residents with notice of open calls for exhibition opportunities at BAC and beyond, including museum shows, art fairs, grants, corporate installations and art sales. Resident artists also have access to onsite and offsite exhibition opportunities, artist advancement programming and coaching, printmaking, photography, kiln and woodworking workshops, Wi-Fi, and 24-hour facility access.
Residents are selected through a jurying process using a Likert Scale, with primary criteria being conceptual innovation and technical proficiency of artwork. Applicants' names are kept confidential and applications are reviewed by jurors selected from a rotating panel of gallerists, museum professionals, collectors, curators, and higher education professionals. Only applicants with an average score of 18 points or above out of 30 total points are eligible for acceptance. Finalists are invited for a 30-minute in-person, phone, or videoconference administrative interview. Application deadlines are February 1st, April 1st, June 1st, August 1st, October 1st, and December 1st. The entry fee is $26.75. Submit your artist statement, artistic CV, statement of intent for residency, 2 professional references, headshot and 4-6 images representing your body of work. If your work is more suitably presented in video or audio format, contact the office at 305-576-2828 or [email protected].
