About This Call
Arts & Humanities Bainbridge, in partnership with the City of Bainbridge Island, is requesting proposals from Pacific Northwest artists for a two- or three-dimensional artwork to be commissioned for The Waypoint park on Bainbridge Island, Washington. The total art budget is $42,000, which includes all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, travel, and an identifying plaque. Artwork is anticipated to be installed between February and June 2016.
The Waypoint is located at the corner of Winslow Way and Highway 305, next to the Bainbridge Island Ferry terminal. Approximately 75,000 people annually pass through this gateway. The park was created through a citizen initiative that transformed a former gas station site into a welcoming green space with historical markers, memorial benches, stone walls, boulders, and wayfaring signs. A circular area (10-foot diameter) within the pathway is prepared for installation and encircled with fused glass mosaics. Artwork can be placed within one area of the meandering pathway and/or the planting berms.
Design considerations include marine environment exposure (salt air and high winds), heavy car emissions, and high foot traffic. Artwork must be designed for minimal maintenance without special equipment. Mechanical water features will not be considered. Limited electrical access is available. Viewers may touch accessible artwork, so pieces within reach must endure substantial public use. Replacement features, if required, must be commercially available.
Applications must include: artist statement and answers to three questions about your approach to public art, connection to project themes, and suitability of your medium for The Waypoint; four to ten digital images of past work from the past 10-15 years; two or three preliminary sketches for the project; current resume; and names, titles, and phone numbers for three professional references. Contact Eliza Lane, Program Assistant, at [email protected] or 206.842.7901 for further information.
