About This Call
Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA), operated by the City of Pompano Beach's Cultural Affairs Department, is seeking participants for its Artists in Residence Program. Eight studios at BaCA are available to individual artists for a nine-month period from October 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. The residency aims to cultivate an environment where artists can develop their talents through artistic experimentation and collaboration. BaCA is located in the City's Innovation District and features over 6,000 square feet of exhibition space across three galleries on the first floor, with the second floor serving as the creative home of the AiR Program. The facility includes an open social area for artistic dialogue and collaboration, and offers two kilns for ceramics and pottery artists.
Eligibility is open to all individual artists in the U.S. who are at least 18 years of age and not currently enrolled in an academic program. The application deadline is May 30, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT, with a $25 application fee. Selected artists receive 24-hour access to affordable studio space (96-196 square feet) at $300/month for the 9-month residency. Benefits include one-time feature as "Artist of the Month" with marketing support, artist profile on PBCAD website, additional gallery space for featured artist showcases, group exhibition with marketing support, portfolio review if desired, and opportunities to sell artwork at PBCAD events. Art sales from City exhibitions result in the City retaining 30% commission with 70% paid to the artist.
Selected artists agree to create a proposed project or body of work during residency and unveil it at a culminating event on June 2, 2023. Additional commitments include attendance at monthly Old Town Untapped events (first Friday of each month, 6-10pm), minimum six hours in-studio weekly during regular hours (10am-6pm Tues.-Fri., 10am-4pm Sat.), participation in bi-monthly artist meetings, leading or participating in at least one "lunch with art" program and one offsite program, assisting with marketing participation, and consenting to a Level 1 background check. Eligible artistic disciplines include drawing, painting, sculpture, dance, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, spoken word/poetry, interdisciplinary work, social practice, ceramics, architecture, and urban design/placemaking.
