About This Call

Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA), operated by the City of Pompano Beach's Cultural Affairs Department, is seeking participants for its Artists in Residence Program. Eight studios at BaCA are available to individual artists—visual, performative, and theatrical—for a nine-month period from October 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. The residency cultivates an environment where artists can develop their talents through artistic experimentation and collaboration. BaCA is located in Pompano Beach's Old Town neighborhood and features over 6,000 square feet of exhibition space across three galleries, plus a second floor with studio spaces and an open social area. The facility includes two kilns available to ceramicists and pottery artists.

Eligibility is open to all individual artists in the U.S. who are at least 18 years old and not currently enrolled in an academic program. The application deadline is May 30, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT, with an application fee of $25. Selected artists receive 24-hour access to affordable studio space (96-196 square feet) at $250/month for 8 months, with no fees charged during September move-in or June. After completing the full 9-month residency, artists receive a 30% reimbursement of paid participation fees (contingent on studio condition). Artists must spend at least six hours in-studio weekly during regular hours (10am-6pm Tues.-Fri., 10am-4pm Sat.) and have 24/7 access beyond that.

Benefits include one-time feature as "Artist of the Month" with a $500 stipend, retail window space, additional 2nd floor gallery space, marketing and PR support including artist profile on PBCAD website, professional development classes, and opportunities to sell artwork (30/70 commission split applies to sales from City exhibitions and shared Salon Wall). Selected artists agree to create a proposed project or body of work, participate in monthly Old Town Untapped events (first Friday, 6-10pm), attend monthly artist meetings, lead or participate in at least one "lunch with art" program and one offsite program, assist with marketing their participation, and consent to a Level 1 background check. A culminating group exhibition and event is scheduled for June 7, 2024.
