About This Call
The Town of Avon, Colorado requests proposals from mural artists or artist teams to create an original mural or murals for the east-facing exterior concrete block walls of the Avon Recreation Center located on Mikaela Way. Applicants may apply to design murals for one, two, or all three walls, though one artist or artist team for all three walls is preferred.
The Recreation Center Mural Project will establish a creative identity and spirit for the developing hardscape connection between the west end of the Main Street Mall and Harry A. Nottingham Park. The mural will become a significant landmark, focal point, and gateway to Nottingham Park that inspires community, conversation, and connection. The CASE Committee seeks a design with a unique and cheerful character representative of the mountain lifestyle. The theme could speak to the beauty of the area's natural resources (Nottingham Park and Lake, Eagle River, native wildlife and/or plant/floral life); cultural legacy (Salute to the USA signature event, Avon LIVE! concert series, bronze sculpture collection); historical preservation (Metcalf Cabin, Nottingham Ranch, water wheel and Bob the Bridge); or the future of the creative and influences of the Latino cultural landscape. The design should not be landscape of mountain scenery nor demonstratively urban.
Selected artist shall be paid up to a $10,000 stipend, all-inclusive of design fees, commercial liability insurance, all costs and materials for installation, including transportation, lodging, and meals. The Town will clean and prime the site prior to installation and provide a boom lift and/or scissor lift for no more than 15 consecutive days for all three walls. Wall A: 34' Tall x 48' Wide (1,632 sq. ft.); Wall B: 34' Tall x 35'2" Wide (1,197 sq. ft.); Wall C: 26'75" Tall x 33'5" Wide (897 sq. ft.). Total combined: 3,726 sq. ft.
Eligibility: Open to all artists and artist teams residing and working in Colorado. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older with necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States. Applicants must be able to complete work before June 15, 2021 and must provide a statement regarding any conflicts of interest and listing of any litigation involving the artist in the past five years.
Application includes: complete contact information; 1 to 5 images of proposed mural design (sketches, digital design, mock-up); project statement describing approach and intention; three relevant mural project references with main contact, scope and description, project budget, project timeline, and project location; and minimum of three digital images and maximum of eight digital images. Selected artists must execute an Independent Contractor Agreement.
Anticipated Timeline: Artist call for entry January 27, 2021; deadline for entry February 23, 2021; proposed selection notification March 22, 2021; installation June 1 through June 15, 2021; completion June 15, 2021. Questions may be directed to Danita Dempsey at [email protected] or 970-748-4065.
