About This Call
The City of Aurora's Art in Public Places Program is seeking a permanent sculptural installation at Peoria Crossing, located in the center of a partial roundabout at approximately East 33rd Ave. and Peoria St. The roundabout serves as a traffic calming and wayfinding device due to RTD-FasTracks and Commuter Rail construction. The location faces the MCPN North Aurora Extended Care Clinic.
The selected sculpture must be made of durable, permanent media that is safe and requires little to no maintenance. The sculpture should be site-specific and properly scaled to its surroundings. It must be no less than eight feet tall and no more than fourteen feet tall, and must fit within a 50-foot diameter featuring xeriscape landscaping. The location is subject to strong winds, strong sun, extreme temperatures, snow loading, and plow spray. No electricity will be provided, but the artwork will be uplit. The artwork should not distract motorists and cannot resemble official traffic or highway signs.
Artists must demonstrate prior experience working on public art projects of similar scale and budget. Artists living within the United States are eligible to apply. Artist teams including fine-arts professionals, architects, and landscape architects are invited to apply. Teams that include one local or regional artist may be given preference. The project budget is $35,000, which must cover design, fabrication, materials, engineering review, shipping, contract labor, installation, insurance, travel expenses, final documentation, and incidental expenses. The artist is responsible for delivering the proposed artwork within budget.
Submit a letter of interest (500 words maximum), two-page professional resume, three current references, and six images of previous site-specific public art or existing art available for installation. Images should be in JPEG format, 1920 pixels maximum on the longest side, 72 dpi, under 2MB. Include dimensions and weight of proposed sculpture(s). Finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium to participate in an interview and site visit. Installation is scheduled for June 2014.
