About This Call

Aurora is seeking artists to create an interior mural for the Aurora Municipal Courthouse, located on the second floor of the courthouse rotunda. The mural will be visible from across the 2nd floor as well as from the first floor of the rotunda. The space available is 11 feet high by 14 feet 2 inches wide.

Thematically, the mural should reflect the physical context while also reflecting the work that takes place within the building and represent the diverse community of Aurora. The Art Selection Panel is seeking a unique work that addresses the theme of Justice and Our Community, with a welcoming presence. Depending on choice of materials, the mural can be painted on-site during open courthouse hours or created in a studio setting on a suitable substrate such as aluminum or M.D.O. and moved to the site for installation.

Applicants must submit 6-10 images of relevant work (conceptual proposals will not be reviewed), a professional resume not exceeding 2 pages, and a statement of interest describing their connection to the Aurora community and the theme of the mural. Eligibility is open only to artists who live and work in Colorado. The ideal artist is comfortable working in the public sphere, enjoys working with people, has demonstrated experience creating murals, and has an affinity for the theme. The budget is $10,000 and includes all costs related to the project: design, project management, fabrication, all materials, transportation, equipment rental, installation, insurance, and any other associated costs. Application deadline: Thursday, 11/30/2023 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Finalists will be notified the week of 12/11/2023, with finalist presentations the week of 2/19/2024. Approval by the Art in Public Places Commission is scheduled for their March meeting. The artwork is desirably to be completed and installed in August 2024, with some flexibility on timing.
