About This Call

The City of Aurora, Colorado is seeking an interior aerial sculpture to serve as a dynamic focal point of the new Aurora Animal Shelter. The suspended artwork should create a sense of movement, inspiration, and welcome, offering a memorable first impression for visitors and setting the tone for their experience in the facility. Designed with visibility in mind, the piece will be viewed from multiple vantage points and should complement the architectural character of the space. This commission is part of a broader vision for public art at the shelter, alongside opportunities for interior mural(s) and an exterior artwork, with the potential for artists to contribute to a unified artistic presence across the facility.

The public art project budget is $40,000, which includes design, project management, overhead, fabrication, transportation, installation, insurance, and any other costs associated with the project. Applicants must submit 8-10 images or videos of relevant work (no conceptual proposals, renderings, or AI images), a professional resume not to exceed two pages, a statement of interest, and a brief bio. This call is open only to artists residing in the United States and its territories. Selection criteria include demonstrated experience creating three-dimensional permanent works of art, experience working on projects with budgets of $25,000 or greater, comfort working in the public sphere, and experience working with people.

The selection process occurs in three phases. Phase One: The Selection Panel will identify the most qualified applicants and select three finalists. Phase Two: Three finalists will each receive a $400 honorarium to participate in an optional site visit, develop a formal proposal, and participate in a virtual interview. Phase Three: The Selection Panel will recommend the selected applicant to the Art in Public Places Commission for approval, followed by a multi-level approval process culminating with City Council. Finalists will be notified the week of November 24, 2025, with virtual presentations scheduled for January 13, 2026. The multi-level approval process is expected to be completed by February 2026, with work completion and installation desirably occurring between Q4 2026 and Q2 2027. Questions should be directed to [email protected].
