About This Call

The Greater Augusta Arts Council is seeking ten (10) leasable, pre-existing outdoor sculptures for a temporary two-year installation in Downtown Augusta, Georgia. This is part of a larger Public Art Master Plan for the City of Augusta intended to create a walkable and promotable art trail to attract local and regional visitors.

All ten sculpture sites will have a 4'x4' concrete base and are fully accessible, spaced to promote walking from one sculpture to another. The work must be original, pre-existing art in any media suitable for outdoor public space. Sculptures must be structurally sound and secured to the concrete pad with anchor bolts or similar devices, not extending significantly beyond the boundary. The work must be clearly visible from 50 feet away and capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions common to the Augusta River Region, including hot summers, cold winters, humidity, heavy rain, wind, thunderstorms, and occasional snow. The work must be suitable for pedestrian interaction with low exposure to injury, with no sharp or easily climbable parts. All works will be heavily promoted through online, printed, radio, and TV ads, with a digital walking tour created featuring artist content. Selected artists will receive a $3,000 stipend for the 2-year lease ($1,500 upon installation, $1,500 upon de-installation). Installation is scheduled for January 15-30, 2021, and de-installation for January 15-30, 2023. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the Greater Augusta Arts Council will recommend one or more works be purchased by the City for inclusion in Augusta's permanent public art collection.

Eligibility is open to all artists, preferably professional sculptors, at least 18 years of age and residing in the United States. Greater Augusta Arts Council employees and members of the Public Art Advisory Panel are not eligible. Artists may apply up to 3 times with separate works. Work samples should include 3-10 images. Selected artists must provide a $1 million liability insurance policy with the City of Augusta and Greater Augusta Arts Council named as Additional Insured prior to installation. Selected artists are responsible for transportation of their work to and from the site. The City will provide adequate staff and heavy equipment (crane or forklift) to assist with installation and de-installation. Artist shall be responsible for maintaining the sculpture; the City shall be responsible for maintaining the exhibition site. All selected sculptures will be insured for liability and physical damage through the City of Augusta during the loan period.
