About This Call
The Audubon Artist Residency at Hog Island offers four individual residencies in 2025: June 8-20, July 13-25, August 10-22, or August 24-September 5. One artist will be selected for each available period. The residency is located at the Bingham Cottages, restored historic structures on Hog Island that serve as a creative retreat. The facility is rustic and not for everyone: the cabin is a simple, uninsulated and unheated wooden structure located 3/4-mile from the main Audubon camp. There is no running water at the cabin (drinking water provided in a cooler, outhouse toilet), minimal electricity via solar panel (one outlet for charging devices), and no internet at the cottages (WIFI available at main campus). Cooking is not allowed at the residency site; breakfast and lunch foods will be provided in a cooler, and residents join the camp for evening meals. The cabin can only accommodate one person at a time, and pets are not allowed.
Artist residents must be in good health and able to regularly walk the uneven, rocky path to the main campus for meals and services. There is no charge for the residency aside from the $45 application fee. Residents are expected to provide programming to the camp during their stay and donate a piece of work to the camp collection and archives. Residents are responsible for transportation to the mainland dock in Bremen, where Audubon staff will provide boat transportation to and from the island.
Application requirements include: resume/CV with brief bio (not exceeding four pages), statement of intent describing how the residency will support your work and a presentation you would be willing to share with the camp community, and samples of artistic work (6 images for visual artists; 4-6 samples not exceeding 6 pages for literary artists; 3 compositions not exceeding 10 minutes total for musicians/composers/sound artists; 3 productions not exceeding 10 minutes total for performance artists/filmmakers/videographers). Applicants must be 21 years or older. A panel of working artists and Audubon staff will review applications and make selections. Jury dates: 2/1/25 - 2/28/25.
