About This Call
The Audubon Artist Residency at Hog Island offers three individual residency periods in 2026: July 12-24, August 9-21, and August 30-September 11. Located on Hog Island off the Maine coast, the program provides artists with a solitary retreat in nature at the historic Bingham Cottages, originally built by writer Mabel Loomis Todd and her family in 1908. The residency is free of charge aside from the $45 application fee, though residents are required to provide programming to the camp during their stay and donate a piece of work for the camp collection.
The residency cabin is a rustic, uninsulated wooden structure located 3/4-mile from the main Audubon camp via hiking trail. There is no running water, cooking facilities, or internet at the cottages - drinking water is provided in a cooler, and an outhouse serves as the toilet facility. Minimal electricity is available via solar panel for charging devices. Residents receive breakfast and lunch provisions at their cabin and join the camp community for evening meals. Showers, flush toilets, and WIFI are available at the main campus.
Application is open to artists 21 years and older. Requirements include a resume/CV (maximum 4 pages), statement of intent describing how the residency will support your work and a proposed presentation for the camp community, and work samples: 6 images for visual artists, 4-6 samples not exceeding 6 pages for literary artists, or 3 compositions/productions not exceeding 10 minutes total for musicians, composers, sound artists, performance artists, filmmakers, and videographers. Applications are reviewed by a panel of working artists and Audubon staff.
