Athenaeum Solo or Group Show: 2022-2023

The Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia invites artists and curators to submit proposals for solo shows, group shows, or curated exhibitions. Artists who live or work in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia may submit proposals for solo shows. Groups of artists from the region may submit proposals for group shows. Curators living or working anywhere may submit proposals for shows featuring works by artists living or working in the region.

All visual media is welcome, but every work must be wall-mounted and less than 9 inches deep. Paintings, drawings, collages, and similar works must be framed or fully finished, wired, and ready to hang on picture hooks. Sculpture must be less than 9 inches deep and lighter than 30 pounds. No floor-mounted or free-standing work will be considered, and work requiring electricity will not be considered. Proposals will be evaluated by Athenaeum Gallery Director Twig Murray based on artistic intent and communication, uniqueness, technical excellence, and recent display history in the area.

The entry fee is $40.00. Applicants may submit 3 applications with 5-12 images per application. The Athenaeum Gallery will retain a 40% commission on works sold and issue a check for 60% of the sales price within thirty days after the show closes. For curator-proposed shows, the commission structure can be adjusted with full agreement of the gallery and curator. All works will be insured by the Athenaeum Gallery for 100% of the retail price during the show. Artists are responsible for delivery and pickup of unsold works.
