Athenaeum Gallery Solo or Group Show Application

The Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia invites artists and curators to submit proposals for solo shows, group shows, or curated exhibitions. Artists who live or work in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia may submit proposals for solo shows. Groups of artists from the region may submit proposals for group shows. Curators living or working anywhere may submit proposals for shows featuring works by artists living or working in the Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia area.

All visual media is welcome, but every work must be wall-mounted and less than 9 inches deep. Paintings, drawings, collages, and similar works must be framed or fully finished, wired, and ready to hang on picture hooks. Sculpture must be less than 9 inches deep and lighter than 30 pounds. No floor-mounted or free-standing work will be considered, and work that requires electricity will not be considered. Applicants must submit 5 to 15 images of their work. The entry fee is $40.00.

Proposals will be evaluated by Athenaeum Gallery Director Twig Murray based on what the artist is trying to achieve or communicate, what makes the work unique or interesting, technical excellence, and recent display history in the area. The Athenaeum Gallery will retain a 40% commission on works sold and issue a check for 60% of the sales price to the artist no longer than thirty days after the show closes. For curator-proposed shows, the commission structure can be adjusted with full agreement of the gallery and curator. All works in the show will be insured by the Athenaeum Gallery for 100% of the retail price during the run of the show. Artists are responsible for delivery and pickup of unsold works.
