About This Call
Aspen Pitkin Employee Housing Inc. (APEHI), a nonprofit organization formed in 1978, is seeking to commission a commemorative public art installation to recognize select APEHI advocates and board members who have either passed away or moved on from a formal position within the organization. There are currently six individuals nominated for this honor, but the work should be able to accept additional honorees as they are selected in the future. The permanent commemoration must provide a cohesive and expandable framework for recognition of each individual and their contribution. Short (3-8 word) quotes attributed to each individual may be incorporated into the commemorative piece.
The installation will be sited on the lawn at Hunter Longhouse, an APEHI-owned affordable rental property in Aspen, CO, along a public walkway that connects the complex with a popular nature trail. The installation must not exceed six feet in height and fit within an approximate 8'x8' triangle of softscape. Primary material should be natural stone sourced from the Northern Rocky Mountain West region (Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Montana). Any text incorporated should use simple sans-serif font. The piece must not require more maintenance than one annual cleaning and must withstand extreme freeze-thaw conditions. The design must comply with local codes, be movable if necessary, and provide interest from multiple viewing angles. The artist must be present on site to direct installation.
Proposal budget must not exceed $22,000, which must fund all costs including material selection, fabrication, coordination, artist travel and accommodations, and material delivery. Submissions must include a brief professional background, images of three previously built works, a proposal concept statement, one to twenty design images/sketches/diagrams, a materials list with durability and maintenance information, an explanation of fabrication and installation capabilities, methodology and timeline, and a firm all-inclusive budget. Digital submissions should be in JPEG format only, maximum 5 MB. The finalist will be notified by April 3, 2015, and will have three days to accept. Upon acceptance, the artist must sign a contract with APEHI. The finalist will be afforded a minimum of 12 weeks to complete the installation, with delivery and installation by July 24, 2015. In addition to the $22,000 construction budget, $3,000 in prize money will be awarded upon successful completion.
