About This Call
The Art Students League of Denver is seeking artist proposals for the Flagpole Project, a community-engaged initiative celebrating the organization's 35th anniversary. Artists will create flags, banners, pennants, and other fiber art pieces to display on ASLD's flagpole at 200 Grant Street, Denver, CO, and on a mobile flagpole throughout different neighborhoods over 18 months. The fiber art pieces will contemplate the region's history, with a steering committee of artists, historians, and community members selecting the facts and images to be represented. At each display location, QR codes will provide information on the meaning of flags, including their history and symbolism. Displays will be changed regularly over the 18-month period, accompanied by programming including panel discussions and other forums for conversation. This program is supported by a P.S. You Are Here grant through Denver Arts & Venues.
Proposals are open to emerging and established Colorado artists. Selected artists will receive a $750 stipend. Between 12-18 proposals will be accepted. Artists will be responsible for designing and fabricating their work by May 1, with access to ASLD's fiber arts studio if necessary and the option to be paired with fiber artists. ASLD will provide ripstock nylon in various colors, posca markers, and acrylic paints, or artists may create their own flags following material guidelines.
Applications must include a short narrative description of the historic event/people/place, a simple schematic showing how many flags/banners or pennants would be needed, a CV/resume with current contact information, and up to five sample images of previous artwork. Submissions require a minimum of 1 image and maximum of 5 images, with up to 4 videos optional. Questions can be directed to Rachel Basye at [email protected].
