About This Call
The Downtown Partnership is commissioning artists to design and paint murals in the Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District, located in Downtown San Diego. The District is composed of eight city blocks bounded by Second Avenue, Market Street, Sixth Avenue, and J Street, and includes twenty historic structures constructed between 1883-1930. The District aims to become the social and cultural center of various Asian Pacific ethnic groups within San Diego and serve as a cultural destination point within the region.
Successful applicants will be responsible for site observation and analysis, developing three conceptual designs with descriptions, presenting designs for feedback, creating a refined conceptual design, developing a final design, and submitting final digital files with specifications. The artist may need to work with the installer regarding digital files and will manage the project with ongoing communication with the project team.
Applicants must be 18 years or older and reside or be based in San Diego County. Application requirements include a letter of interest, artist's resume or brief biography, three professional references with contact information, and 3-10 images of previous relevant work (JPG or GIF files accepted). Teams of two or more must submit all requirements for each team member. Timeline includes submission deadline April 24, 2022, finalist notification May 11, 2022, finalist interviews the week of May 16, 2022, pre-design meeting in June 2022, concept design presentation in July 2022, final design due in August 2022, and art installation in Winter 2023.
