About This Call
ArtsPot is a public art initiative in Downtown Colorado Springs seeking artists' applications for decorative sculptures to be placed in three-foot flowerpots lining downtown sidewalks from February through April. The initiative aims to purchase up to 12 works that are resistant to vandalism and weather, durable enough for several seasons of display, and may be reproduced in multiple colors and renditions. Simple graphic forms are preferred, with extra consideration given to works that reference Colorado Springs culture and/or history. Downtown Ventures may accept a minimum of two versions of the same concept, with possible additional versions considered.
Artists will be compensated $500 per piece. The transaction is a purchase with ownership transferred to Downtown Ventures. Name recognition will be given to artists when works are photographed for digital or print display, with guaranteed coverage on downtowncs.com and associated digital and print publications, plus possible additional local media coverage. Overall size must be no more than 3-4 feet high and 2-3 feet wide, with sculptures not extending beyond the flowerpot rims (36-inch diameter). Works must be highly durable and able to withstand cold temperatures, wind, ice, snow, vandalism, and graffiti. Metal, 3D-printed plastic, or polycarbonate are preferred. Preference will be given to works light enough to be moved by two people with no extra equipment. Specific technical specifications include a 2-inch diameter round tube stock base (14-gauge, minimum 12 inches long) with a 5/16-inch hole drilled through at three inches from the base.
Proposals must be submitted by Friday, November 11, 2016, via email to [email protected] with subject line "ARTSPOT PROPOSAL." Required documents include curriculum vitae, artist statement, specifications of proposed work(s) (title, medium/materials, dimensions, weight, color, finish, installation requirements), and renderings or images of proposed work(s). Submit 1-3 images in PDF or JPEG form. Jurors will evaluate proposals based on artistic merit and specifications. All applicants will be notified of acceptance or decline by Friday, December 2, 2016. Installation will take place mid-January through early February 2017. For questions, call 719-886-0088.
