About This Call

The Arts & Science Council seeks professional artists or arts teams to commission public artwork for the North Tryon Street Corridor revitalization project in Charlotte, NC. The project aims to support the City's North Tryon Area Plan and create Charlotte's first designated green road, complementing an urban agriculture center planned for the area. The permanent artwork should be highly visible to vehicular traffic and integrated into the new streetscape, while temporary public art and engagement projects should explore environmental themes relevant to the corridor.

Two funding tracks are available: Permanent Integrated Public Art ($135,000 to cover all artist fees, design, fabrication, installation, travel, public meeting presentations, models, shipping, administration, taxes, and insurance) and McColl Center for Visual Art Residency and Temporary/Engagement Projects ($12,000 stipend, $2,000 materials budget, travel allowance, and housing if outside Charlotte). Artists must be U.S. residents able to commit to a three-month residency at McColl Center for Visual Art between May and October 2013. Artists who have received a commission or purchase over $25,000 from the Arts & Science Council cannot apply for another commission for 3 years. ASC staff, City staff, Public Art Commission members, and their immediate families are ineligible.

The selection process is multi-staged. An Artist Selection Panel will evaluate applications based on artistic merit, placemaking experience, project management experience, and ability to work with stakeholders. Up to five finalists will be invited for interviews and project orientation. Up to three artists will be shortlisted to create proposals and receive a $1,500 stipend plus travel allowance to present in Charlotte. The Artist Selection Panel will recommend the selected artist to the Public Art Commission for final approval. Finalists will be notified in January 2013, with finalist orientation in early February 2013 and project award in March 2013. Design completion is targeted for December 2014 and installation for 2016.
