Arts & Science Council: Charlotte-Douglas International Airport FBO Plaza Project

The Arts & Science Council is inviting selected artists to submit qualifications for a new exterior public art project at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport's fixed-base operator facility plaza. The project aims to reflect the context of the surrounding region, present a unique welcome to travelers, animate the existing plaza area, and be durable and low-maintenance. The project budget is $265,000 for complete development, oversight, and coordination of project design, fabrication, and installation, including engineering, permitting, inspections, travel, public meeting presentations, shipping, administration, taxes, and insurance.

Applications from invited artists will be accepted through May 20, 2013. Finalists will be notified in June 2013 and a site visit will be arranged. Proposal presentations will occur in July/August 2013, with an artist to be chosen and commissioned shortly thereafter. The artwork is projected to be installed by Spring 2014. A selection panel comprised of public art commissioners, the Aviation Director, Airport Architect, an arts professional, a facility user, and business and tourism representatives will review applications. Three finalists will be selected to create proposals and will travel to Charlotte for a site orientation. An honorarium of $2,500 will be awarded to finalists following presentation of their proposals, and travel costs will be paid by the ASC Public Art Program.
