About This Call

The Honolulu Museum of Art is seeking submissions for its triennial exhibition, Artists of Hawaiʻi 2020. Launched in 1950, this open-call exhibition showcases art by Hawaiʻi-based artists. The exhibition is co-curated by Taylour Chang, Curator of Film and Performance, and Marlene Siu, Exhibitions Manager. Local artists are encouraged to submit current work that explores urgent issues of our time and place. The curators invite artists to push the boundaries of the viewer's overall experience and to challenge conventional narratives through bold voices.

Submission dates are September 20 – October 25, 2019. The exhibition will run from September 12, 2020 – January 17, 2021. Only artists living in the state of Hawaiʻi are eligible. Works are eligible in any medium or combination of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, film and video, light works, sound, ceramic, glass, wood, fiber, and metal/jewelry. There is no submission fee.

Artists must submit a digital portfolio through CaFÉ.org containing: a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 digital images of current work created within the past 2 years (or up to 8 still images with up to 2 videos/audio tracks), artist bio or CV, artist statement (limit 1,000 characters including spaces), and a brief proposal (1 page or less) describing the artwork you would like to create if selected. The museum will notify all artists of results via email on or before November 11, 2019. For exhibition questions, contact [email protected].
