About This Call
The Honolulu Museum of Art's 62nd Artists of Hawai'i is a juried biennial exhibition scheduled for February 9–May 28, 2017, featuring exemplary work by artists living in Hawai'i. The exhibition showcases contemporary artwork produced across the islands. All artists currently residing in the state of Hawai'i are invited to submit images of 5 to 10 recent works in any medium, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, film and video, light works, sound, ceramic, glass, wood, fiber, and metal/jewelry.
Submission dates are January 8–February 8, 2016. The selection team is led by Healoha Johnston, the museum's Curator of the Arts of Hawai'i, and includes the museum's Curator of Contemporary Art Jay Jensen, Curatorial Assistant Contemporary Art Katherine Love, Director Stephan Jost, Deputy Director Allison Wong, and Director of Spalding House Aaron Padilla. The team will review submissions beginning in February 2016 to select artists. Lead curator Healoha Johnston will conduct ongoing studio visits with selected artists as they refine or develop work for the exhibition. The show will occupy approximately 4,000 square feet of gallery space at the Honolulu Museum of Art's 900 S. Beretania Street location, with each artist having a body of work shown. Cash awards will be presented at the time of the exhibition.
Submissions must be made digitally through CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org) only. Artists may submit a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 digital images, or up to 2 videos/audio tracks along with up to 8 still images. An artist's statement (limit 1,000 characters including spaces) and a brief resumé (one page maximum) outlining exhibition history are required. There is no submission fee. The museum will notify all artists of results via email on or before March 8, 2016. Selected artists must submit a checklist of works by December 8, 2016. Hand-delivered artwork drop-off is Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 9:00–11:00 am at the museum's street-level loading dock on Victoria Street. Shipped entries must arrive between Tuesday, January 17, 2017 and Friday, January 20, 2017. A shipping stipend (amount to be determined) will be given to artists from neighbor islands.
