About This Call

The Honolulu Academy of Arts 58th Annual Juried Exhibition showcases the quality and diversity of art in Hawai'i. Exhibition dates: May 14–August 16, 2009. Opening reception: May 13, 2009, 6:30–9:30 p.m. A free lecture will be presented by juror Laura Hoptman, Senior Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 4:00 pm in the Doris Duke Theatre.

Only artists residing in the state of Hawaii are eligible. Functional and nonfunctional works are eligible in any medium: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, sculpture, film and video, light works, sound, ceramic, glass, fiber, jewelry, and other art forms. No work shown previously in a juried exhibition on O'ahu is eligible. All works must be original and created independently within the past two years. Size and weight restrictions apply: up to 7 feet in each of two dimensions, not more than 3 feet in the third dimension; general weight limit of 250 lbs; suspended works limited to 50 lbs per unit. Entries must be in finished condition with appropriate framing and hanging hardware included.

Submissions are conducted online through CaFÉ in digital format only. You may submit up to 3 artworks for judging with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 6 digital images. Entry fee is $15 (includes one digital image submission); each additional digital image is $5. Include the date of the work in the title field and an artist statement (limit 1000 characters). Application deadline: Friday, January 2, 2009, 12:00 noon. All entry fees must be received by Monday, January 5, 2009, 4:00 pm. Jury results will be sent by email no later than Friday, February 13, 2009. Selected artists must deliver works by Saturday, May 2, 2009, 9:00 am–12:00 pm at the Academy's loading dock on Victoria Street, or ship by Friday, May 1, 2009. Works must be picked up between Tuesday, August 18 and Saturday, August 22, 2009, 9am–12 noon and 1–4 pm. The juror will select 20 to 25 finalists as candidates for special recognition awards, which may include studio visits in February. Special purchase awards include the John Young Award ($3000), Melusine Award for Painting ($3000), Roselle Davenport Award for Artistic Excellence ($2750), Jim Winters Award for 3-D Design ($1200), and Cynthia Eyre Award ($1750).
