About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach will commission an emerging artist for the design and installation of a mural on an exterior wall behind the Bailey Contemporary Arts Building located at 41 NE 1st St., Pompano Beach, Florida. This will be the fourth mural in the Artists Alley expansion project.
The Public Art Committee is seeking mural designs that play with the idea of perspective and optical illusions, though other themes will be considered. Designs should have a strong presence with a creative concept. Materials, design, and palette must withstand local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. Logos and words are not permitted. The selected artist must apply a UV resistant sealant to the finished product. Spray paint is encouraged as the wall is textured. The wall measures approximately 23 ft. x 13 ft.
The selected artist will receive $1,500, which includes all taxes, insurance, fees, and equipment needed to complete the mural (such as cherry picker and paint). The artist must create a timelapse video of the mural as it develops. Staff will review and inspect the design during installation and provide suggestions that the artist must follow. This is a national call open to emerging visual artists only—those in the early stages of their career who have not yet established a reputation among art critics. Artists who are immediate family or business partners of Public Art Committee members or program staff are not eligible. Submit 3-6 images of work samples.
