About This Call
Artistry Through Deaf Eyes is a national exhibition of visual art celebrating deaf contemporary artists, running September 1-24, 2017 at The Studio Door in San Diego, CA. September is Deaf Awareness Month, and this exhibition celebrates the diversity and rich artistic traditions of deaf visual artists. An opening reception will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 6 PM to 9 PM.
Accepted categories include fine art in the following media: painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist books, ceramics, stoneware, stained glass, sculpture, and oversized jewelry defined as fine art. The exhibition does not accept small jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation, or works requiring an external electrical source. All submissions must be original work by the artist.
Entry fee is $35 for one work, $40 for two works, or $45 for three works. Artists may submit 1-3 images. The submission deadline is July 28, 2017 at 10:59 PM PST. Artwork must be submitted online through CAFÉ. Artists will be notified by August 1, 2017. Depending on the number of entries, the juror will select works for the physical gallery and/or the online gallery. All accepted works are eligible for awards. A Juror's Award certificate will be presented to three works, with one designated "Best in Show" to be featured on the exhibition catalog cover. The juror is Jon Savage, a San Diego artist known for pop art paintings.
2-dimensional work must not exceed 8 feet in height and 4 feet in width including frame and must arrive gallery-ready and ready to hang. 3-dimensional work must fit through an average doorway and not exceed 8 feet in height. 2-D artwork should be framed in black or natural wood with no color mats (unless essential to the work) and must use plexi, not glass. Shipped artwork must be received by August 25, 2017. Hand-delivery is available August 26-27, 2017. Artists are responsible for shipping costs. Artwork may be picked up September 24 (4-5 PM) or September 26 (noon-7 PM). For sales, 60% goes to the artist and 40% to The Studio Door. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show. The Studio Door will mail payment within 30 days after the exhibition closes. All selected artwork will be included in a national exhibition virtual catalog. If artwork is selected, The Studio Door reserves the right to photograph and use images for marketing and publicity without compensation.
