About This Call

The Arts Innovator Award recognizes artists who demonstrate innovation in their art practice. This unrestricted award of $25,000 is given annually to two Washington State generative artists of all disciplines who are originating new work, experimenting with new ideas, taking risks and pushing the boundaries in their respective fields.

Eligibility: Applicants must be an individual generative artist or a team of artists with a history of working as a unit (teams must contact the Program Manager to verify eligibility). Applicants must have a minimum of five years in professional art practice, be a Washington State resident at the time of application and at the time of payment (November 2013), and be 18 years of age or older by June 10, 2013. Graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in any degree program after June 10, 2013 are not eligible. Current Artist Trust staff, Board members, Honorary Committee members, consultants, contractors, or their immediate family members are not eligible. Those affiliated with Chihuly Studio, Portland Press, the Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation, or who are lineal descendants or ancestors of Dale or Leslie Chihuly or spouses thereof are not eligible. Previous recipients of the Arts Innovator Award are not eligible. Applications must be made in the name of an individual artist; applications made in the name of collectives, companies, bands, groups and ensembles will not be accepted.

Applications must include: Application Form, Artist Résumé, Essay, Work Samples, and Letter of Recommendation. Work samples may include up to 20 images, 3 audio files, and 3 video files (maximum 23 total samples). A maximum of two work sample types are allowed for every discipline category. All applications must have work samples. Selection will be based on advancement of the artist's practice as evidenced by their body of work, panelists' subjective judgment of creative excellence as presented in the work submitted in the supporting materials, and the professional background of the artist. All applicants will be notified of results via email. The review and notification process will take several months with announcements made in October 2013. Contact Miguel Guillén, Program Manager, at [email protected] with questions.
