About This Call
The Crooked Tree Arts Center's Artist Residency Program is designed to support emerging artists by providing working and living space, an opportunity to build their portfolio, and a chance to exhibit their work. The program is open to creative artists skilled in painting, drawing, illustrating, pastels, and 2-dimensional multimedia. Participants spend two to four weeks in a rural setting in Northern Michigan, within walking distance of Lake Michigan and the village of Good Hart, with access to natural preserves, state parks, and scenic landscapes.
Benefits include free housing and workspace, provided food, time to focus on artistic work in a scenic environment, opportunity to exhibit work at Crooked Tree Arts Center post-residency, portfolio development, and connection to the local artist community. Requirements include being over 21 with a completed undergraduate degree, pursuing an MFA or art career, and willingness to participate in an educational session (lecture, workshop, plein air expedition, or artist discussion group) and exhibit at CTAC. The application requires submission of a resume, artist statement, statement of intent, five images of work with medium and date, and a $25 application fee.
The residence includes a studio apartment above a garage with a small sitting area, private bathroom, beds, kitchenette, laundry access, and internet/mobile phone access (reliability not guaranteed). The studio space features natural and track lighting, a 6x11 foot work area, work table, easel, and shelving. Residency dates available: May 4-21, August 3-17, or October 1-17, 2014. Artists must provide their own transportation to Northern Michigan; a bike will be made available. Artists must be non-smokers with no pets. Application deadline: January 31, 2014. Notification of acceptance: week of February 17, 2014.
