About This Call

The City of Pompano Beach will commission an artist for a work for hire mural to be installed on the south exterior wall located at 60 & 50 NE 1st Ave. The approximate size of the wall is 130' long by 17' high. The wall is located in Old Town adjacent to the historic core of the City and will serve as a significant gateway to downtown.

Possible approaches for this mural may include patterns, simple and flowing, abstract or non-objective, bright colors, festive, and welcoming. Limited realism is also acceptable if considerations are made to the multiple distractions, including windows, on the highly textured surface. The design should have a strong presence with a creative concept. Logos are not to be used. The selected artist must apply a graffiti coat and UV resistant sealant to the finished product. The materials, design and palette must stand up to local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. A site visit is not required but is recommended.

The selected artist will receive $45,000, which includes all taxes, insurance, all other fees, and any equipment needed to complete the mural (i.e. cherry picker, paint, etc.). The selected artist will have 60 days to complete the installation. The artist is required to provide photos or video documentation of the entire process. The Public Art Program Manager and Public Art Committee will review and inspect the design in person during installation.

Submissions must include: a concept statement (limited to 2000 characters), digital images of previous mural projects (minimum 3, maximum 5), and a resume/CV. An optional proposed design concept with a broad sketch drawing and color palette may be included. Three artists will be shortlisted and paid an honorarium of $200.00. Shortlisted artists will be required to submit detailed design proposals including mock images and a budget list. The Public Art Committee will review applications and make a recommendation to the City Commission for final approval. Artists with immediate family or business partners on the selection committee are not eligible to apply.
