About This Call
HUB-BUB is partnering with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries to host an artist-in-residence for 11 months. The artist's time will be divided between their own artistic projects and community work with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. The community work can span classes, workshops, curation, art projects featuring community members, and other activities. Requirements are flexible to allow for creative freedom, with all work guided and supported by a Projects Committee made up of employees from both organizations.
The residency is open to artists in any discipline willing to work in the Spartanburg community for 11 months. Work in public and/or community arts is beneficial but not necessary. Artists must demonstrate experience working collaboratively and show both artistic merit and ability to work with groups, organizations, and communities. The resident will dedicate 20 hours per week to community work and is expected to take the lead in inception, organization, and implementation of programming and activities. The artist will have access to facilities at HUB-BUB and the Library Headquarters in downtown Spartanburg, including classrooms, meeting rooms, gallery space, and A/V equipment.
The artist's living expenses are covered, including an apartment, utilities, and a monthly stipend of $750. Additional financial support is provided to develop projects and acquire materials for community work, with use approved by the Projects Committee. Artists are not expected to begin with specific projects in mind and will spend the first month embedding themselves in Spartanburg. Weekly meetings with the Projects Committee will serve as primary liaisons to the community, with community work expected to begin within 6 weeks. Entry fee is $25. Submit artist statement, date of birth, cover letter (no longer than 2 pages), resume or CV, and contact information for 3 professional references via CaFE.
