Artist-in-Residence 2019-2020

The Umbrella Community Arts Center in Concord, MA offers a year-long Artist-in-Residence program for the 2019-2020 season. This program supports emerging artists within the first five years of their career. The accepted artist receives free studio space of approximately 220 square feet with south-facing window, hardwood floors, tall ceilings, and climate control, plus free housing in a one-bedroom cottage adjacent to the studio space. The residency period runs from September 1, 2019 to August 15, 2020.

Residents have access to the multidisciplinary art center's facilities, including an independent ceramics studio and makerspace. As part of the program, the selected artist is expected to make regular, active, and productive use of the studio space; present a body of work created during the residency for exhibition in August/September 2020; present a minimum of three public programs engaging the community in their work and participate in The Umbrella's Open Studios event on April 4-5, 2020; attend monthly Artist Meetings and other artist events; document and share their residency experience via social media, blog posts, videos, and photographs; and maintain communication with Umbrella staff and participate in program evaluations.

Eligibility is open to emerging artists within five years of their most recent degree and not enrolled full-time in an academic program. The entry fee is $35.00. Applicants must submit 3-20 images of their work. All applications are reviewed by a jury of The Umbrella's staff and resident artists. The selected artist will be notified by June 1, 2019.
