About This Call

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Public Art Program is requesting qualifications from professional artists to design perforated steel shade screens for multiple City of Phoenix bus shelters. The shade screen enhancements will be incorporated into bus shelters between Central Avenue and 16th Streets; and Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road. There may be additional opportunities for shade screen features at other city locations. The new bus shelters will increase shade coverage for transit users and promote a more walkable neighborhood, reducing the urban heat impact of exposed vacant lots and hard surfaces.

This RFQ is open to artists with a variety of experience levels and is an excellent opportunity for 2D artists (painters, printmakers, muralists, graphic designers, weavers, fabric artists, etc.). Arizona artists are strongly encouraged to apply. The selected artist(s) will work with the Project Manager to create designs for the perforated steel shade screens that will be fabricated and installed by contractors hired by the City. Artists will be expected to work closely with the community to design and promote a distinctive identity for each community. Designs will be reviewed by the community, Transit and Streets Departments, the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, and the Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission. The estimated budget for the design of each bus shelter screen wall is not expected to exceed $6,000, covering the artist design fee and all costs associated with the design process.

There is no fee to apply. Submissions must be received by February 21, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Arizona time via CaFE. Applicants must submit up to six digital images of previously-created artwork, an image list (1-page limit), a statement of intent (1,000-character limit), and a resume or CV (3-page limit). City of Phoenix employees, Phoenix Arts and Culture Commissioners and their immediate family members, and selection panelists and their immediate families are excluded from participating. Applications from artists' representatives, managers, or galleries will not be accepted. The selection panel will review all applicants as a blind jury.
