About This Call
SHELTER is an exhibition running April 25-June 6, 2014, juried by Catharine Clark, owner/director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.
Eligibility and Requirements: Open to SF Bay Area artists only (within 100 miles from San Rafael, California). Original artwork only; reproductions are prohibited. All submissions must express the theme of Shelter. All visual media are welcome, including installation and video. Entries must be submitted online via CaFE.org; Art Works Downtown does not accept print, email, or disk submissions. Entry fee is $40 for up to 3 entries, with discounts available for AWD Artists and Associate Artists.
Theme: Artists should express their interpretation of and/or relationship to the theme "shelter." There are many different ways to relate to this common theme such as socially, structurally, artistically, legally, etc. The exhibition seeks a range of interpretations that will stimulate viewers to consider what shelter means to them and to their community.
Timeline and Logistics: Entries are due Thursday, March 20 at 4pm. Notification by email will be sent Friday or Saturday, March 27-28. Accepted work must be hand-delivered to Art Works Downtown gallery at 1337 Fourth St., San Rafael on Saturday, April 19 between 10am-4pm. All work must be prepared to install; wall-hung work must be securely wired; video work must include a monitor or projection and player. Artists must deliver an artist statement and resume for the artist binder. A consignment form must be signed upon delivery. The opening reception is Friday, May 9, 5-8pm. Unsold artwork may be picked up Saturday, June 7 between 10am-4pm. Works not picked up will be charged a storage fee of $1.00 per day; works remaining after 30 days become property of Art Works Downtown.
Sales and Insurance: Upon sale, Art Works Downtown accepts the artist's (tax deductible) donation of 40% of the artwork's value. Sales tax is collected and passed on to the artist. Coverage for exhibited work is based on insured value entered on the entry form. Artists may provide their own insurance. Art Works Downtown will take precautions to safeguard work but is not responsible for loss or damage from any cause. Artists permit Art Works Downtown to use accepted images for promotions.
