About This Call
The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, NY invites artists to submit work for the third annual juried exhibition Art that Matters to the Planet: Clarity. The exhibition explores the ways in which art and artists can help shape a more sustainable future. With the 2024 theme inspired by A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes, the exhibition will focus on freshwater ecosystems (including lakes and ponds, rivers and streams, and freshwater wetlands) across the country, and all of the life they support (including fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals).
The institute is requesting submissions from artists who have partnered with scientists, naturalists, and writers on collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. Artists will be judged based on three criteria: Originality (artwork that explores dynamic ways to communicate and demonstrates the persuasive role artists can play in advocating for preservation); Personal Voice or Vision (artwork with an authentic and unique point of view and style); and Technical Skill (artwork that uses technique to advance an original perspective and shows skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative). The exhibition is especially interested in interdisciplinary projects with demonstrable environmental impact that creatively combine art and science.
Entry fee is $15. Artists may submit 1-20 images, 0-6 audio files, and 0-6 video files (32 total samples maximum). All categories of art are welcome. Recent works (created since 2018) will be given preference. The exhibition runs August 3 – October 27, 2024. Loan dates are July 1 – December 6, 2024. Selected artists will be notified by May 10, 2024. The exhibition will be juried by Toby Jurovics, founding director of the Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment and former chief curator at Joslyn Art Museum.
