About This Call
The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, NY invites artists to submit work for the second annual juried exhibition Art that Matters to the Planet 2023: Interconnectivity. This exhibition will focus on trees and explores how the underground web of roots and fungi connecting trees and plants serves as an analogy for the importance of interconnected relationships in creating strong communities. The exhibition runs from June 24 to October 8, 2023.
Artists will be judged on three criteria: Originality (artwork that explores dynamic ways to communicate and demonstrates the persuasive role artists can play in advocating for preservation of the earth); Personal Voice or Vision (artwork with an authentic and unique point of view and style, especially regarding the artist's understanding of or research about their subject); and Technical Skill (artwork that uses technique to advance an original perspective or personal vision and shows skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative). The institute is especially interested in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary projects that creatively combine art and science to reflect on the relationship between society and nature.
Eligible artists should focus on a specific series or project that aligns with the exhibition themes. Submissions may include any combination of materials providing a holistic picture of artistic practice: images of finished artwork, artist statement, sketches, journal entries, photographs, published writing, videos, or other relevant materials. All submitted materials must be available for inclusion in the exhibition. Include descriptions for series/projects and individual artworks with title, date, processes, materials, dimensions, and insurance value. Emerging, mid-career, and established artists are eligible. Entry fee is $15.00. Submissions must include a minimum of 1 and maximum of 26 total samples (1-20 images, 0-6 audio files, 0-6 video files). Deadline: March 19, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
