About This Call
Art Stop is a program presented by the City Art Board and Las Cruces Public Art (LCPA) intended to make art accessible to the community using city bus shelters as exhibit space. Regional artists living in Southwestern New Mexico, particularly Las Cruces and Dona Ana County, will have an opportunity to exhibit their submitted artwork at one bus stop location for a full year if selected.
The selection committee will select six original artworks submitted in digital format to be printed and placed on pre-selected bus shelters in each of the six City Council districts. Selected artwork will be printed in large scale poster format to fit a 6 ft. 2 in. H x 3 ft. W frame, with actual artwork size of 5 ft. 2 in. H x 3 ft. W, allowing for a one foot banner on the bottom of the poster. Artwork will be displayed for 12 months, with new artwork selected on an annual basis. Each selected artist will receive a $500 stipend.
Artwork can be previous or new work using digital or traditional mediums and must be completed artwork, not concept work. Submissions must be in vertical orientation only and fit the specified poster dimensions. Artwork can be one image or a collage of images submitted in photo format (png, jpg, jpeg, etc.). Artists may submit one art piece per artist. Artwork that includes the apparent representation of violence, drug use, nudity (except for context in historical art), pornographic imagery, denigration of individuals and cultures, or desecration of significant cultural symbols will not be considered. Artwork that includes religious subject matter or symbols may be placed in a public space as long as it is solely intended to exhibit cultural or historical traditions. Mass-produced work and signage will not be accepted. Applicants must submit a short bio/artist statement and contact information.
Eligibility is open to all artists living in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, or surrounding area in Southwest New Mexico who are 18 years or older. Previous winners are eligible two years from the year their artwork was exhibited. No member of the current City Art Board, Art Stop selection committee, or employee of the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico, may apply.
