About This Call
The City of Newport invites emerging, mid-career, and established artists to submit work to Art Seen, a rotating outdoor art gallery featuring four locations in the Nye Beach District of Newport. Selected artists will display their work for a two-year period and receive a $1,500 stipend ($750 upon contract completion and $750 upon installation).
Artists may submit up to one entry per location with a $25 entry fee per submission. Artwork must be original, suitable for all ages, and capable of withstanding coastal weather conditions including extreme wind, seasonal rain, theft, vandalism, rust, and corrosion. Artwork cannot exceed 500 pounds in total weight or be taller than 10 feet. All artwork must include a 36-inch diameter plate at the bottom with four 1-inch diameter bolt holes to accommodate the installation base provided by the City. Work-in-progress must be at least 75% completed with photographs submitted; mock-ups, models, drawings, or concepts are not accepted. Artists are responsible for all transportation costs and maintenance of their artwork.
During the two-year display period, artwork will be offered for sale, with the City retaining 30% of sale proceeds to support future public arts programming. If artwork is purchased, the artist has the opportunity to replace it with a new piece approved by the Public Arts Committee. Artwork will be evaluated on visual impact (30%), composition and design (30%), craftsmanship (30%), and adherence to eligibility criteria (10%). All artists must be over 18 years old and eligible internationally. Installation is scheduled for August 2024.
