About This Call
Art on the Atlanta BeltLine is the largest outdoor temporary public art project in the American South. Visual and performing artists, musicians, and historic preservationists are invited to submit proposals for the 2018 edition. Temporary works of visual art and performances will be exhibited along the linear greenspace of the Atlanta BeltLine corridor, with the exhibition opening in July 2018 and works displayed for up to a year.
The Atlanta BeltLine is an emerging system of parks, trails, transit and economic development that reclaims mostly abandoned rail corridors. Projects should be well-researched, well-planned and feasible, considering historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and aesthetic aspects of the site. Potential projects include temporary art and sculptural installations, amenities for visitors, gateway or entrance works, performance works of all kinds, murals, environmental works, and school or class projects. Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Proposed materials shall be modestly priced and durable, requiring minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. All works must be designed to be safely removed at the end of the designated period or disintegrate safely into the environment. Works and performances not suitable for all ages or containing dangerous, toxic, or hazardous materials will not be accepted.
Submissions may be made to the following categories: BeltLine Walls (a two-week mural festival in August), Performance Series (pop-up style performances throughout the exhibition timeframe), BeltLine Concert Series (August 18th and 25th at various parks), Inertia (sculpture exhibition), Lecture Series (panel or individual discussions on topics including Arts & Culture, Ethics & Responsibility, Equity, Affordability, Science & Education, and Transit), and Special Projects (proposals from Atlanta arts and culture organizations). Submissions do not have to be site-specific; artists will work with Atlanta BeltLine to select an exhibit location following selection. There is no budget cap, but funds are limited. In the previous year, the average award was $2,600, ranging between $500 and $6,000. Of the total grant amount, artists must incorporate a minimum of 20 percent as an artist's fee. The award covers design, fabrication, shipping, installation, maintenance, and de-installation. Applicants may solicit contributions of materials or cash from other sources. Accepted entries will be notified the week of March 26th, 2018.
