About This Call
Art on the Atlanta BeltLine is the largest outdoor temporary public art project in the American South. The project seeks visual artists, performers, musicians, and historic preservationists, placing working professionals alongside emerging artists. Visual and performing artists are invited to submit proposals for temporary works of art and performances to be exhibited along the linear greenspace of the Atlanta BeltLine corridor from September 9 through November 30, 2017.
The Atlanta BeltLine is an emerging system of parks, trails, transit, and economic development that reclaims mostly abandoned rail corridors. Potential projects should reflect the concepts of adventure, discovery, and exploration and may include temporary art installations, amenities for visitors, gateway or entrance works, performance works of all kinds, murals, environmental works, and school or class projects. Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses of materials, and new technologies are encouraged. Proposed materials must be modestly priced and durable, requiring minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. All works must be designed to be safely removed at the end of the designated period or disintegrate safely into the environment. Works and performances not suitable for all ages or containing dangerous, toxic, or hazardous materials will not be accepted.
Proposed projects will be presented in four sections of the Atlanta BeltLine: Between Montgomery Ferry Road and Monroe Drive (Northeast Trail), Between Monroe Drive and Irwin Street (Eastside Trail), Between Kirkwood Avenue and Memorial Drive in Reynoldstown (Eastside Trail Extension), and Between Lena St. and Allene Ave. (Westside Trail). Submissions do not have to be site-specific; artists will work with Atlanta BeltLine to select an exhibit location following selection. Performances may occur along the corridor, with specific dates programmed for concerts on September 23-24 and October 7-8. Awards up to $6,000 will be granted; the average award in the previous year was $2,600, ranging from $500 to $6,000. Of the total grant amount, artists must incorporate a minimum of 20 percent as an artist's fee. The award covers design, fabrication, shipping, installation, maintenance, and de-installation. The submission deadline is 5:00 pm Monday, May 1, 2017. Submissions must include a title, one-sentence summary, contact information, biographical information, written narrative (not to exceed 250 words), materials list with installation plan, and detailed budget. Visual artists should submit 3-6 work samples (images, audio, or video combined).
